Bowl / Cuenco
ca.1650-1700, Puebla, Mexico
Houghton Sawyer Collection, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Holstius,
Museum of International Folk Art (Museum of New Mexico), Santa Fe
Both the horror vacui and the dotted ground
on this piece reflect the influence of the mudéjar aesthetic
in the colonial New Spain. However, the thick, dense blue cobalt applied
in a random pattern makes this piece unmistakably Mexican.
