When the Emperor Go-Daigo was exiled in 1331, his retainer Kojima Takanori followed the convoy disguised as a farmer. One rainy night he carved a Chinese poem on a cherry tree and prayed that the Emperor would read it and be heartened. His prayer was granted. |
