López began his artistic career in metal work, first working with welding in high school and then moving into silver and gold jewelry design and fabrication. After studying colonial pieces and techniques he began to experiment with reviving colonial designs in silver hollowware, flatware and ecclesiastical vessels. He learned traditional hand-raised techniques and has continued to expand upon them, developing new forms, such as his escudos and relicarios and integrating other materials, such as mica, into the traditional silver work.
