Moon of the Lonely House

(Hitotsuya no tsuki)

August 1890
The old woman holding the torch is the owner of an isolated house on a lonely moor and the subject of story that haunted many Japanese.  According to one version, the old woman served a lord who had a strange disease.  The only cure was human blood that the woman obtained by killing travelers who stayed at her house.  Here she is stealthily creeping forward to kill an unwary victim asleep behind the low bamboo room divider.
