Maeda Gen’i viewing the moon from his castle

June 1887
Maeda Gen'i (1539-1608) was the lord of Kameyama Castle in Tamba Province and a high ranking government administrator for Toyotomi Hideyoshi.  Reclining on a temple building veranda, Gen’i reflects on the material world that separates the self and one’s Buddha nature and composes the following poem, “Usually I dislike a cloudy sky; tonight I realize that a cloudy sky makes me appreciate the light of the moon.”
