Kenshin watching geese in the moonlight

April 1890

On the eve of a successful battle on the island of Sado, the general Uesugi Kenshin (1530-1578) was inspired to compose a Chinese style poem, “Frost fills the camp and the autumn air is still; lines of returning geese cross the moon of the third hour.”
