Jade Rabbit (Gyokuto)

November 1886

Sun Wukong (Songoku in Japanese) is the immortal monkey who accompanied the priest Tripitaka on his journey from China to India in the 7th century to collect Buddhist scriptures.  Songoku achieved immortality by breaking into the garden of Heaven and eating the peaches of longevity.  Here he dances with the jade rabbit that, according to Chinese legend, lives on the moon.
