Lady Chiyo and the broken water bucket

November 1889

Kaga no Chiyo (1703-1775) was the most celebrated Japanese poetess of the 18th century.  This picture illustrates a contemporary verse based on two of her haiku, “The bottom of the bucket which Lady Chiyo filled has fallen out; the moon has no home in the water.”
