Season temple moon

(Sesonji no tsuki)

1888
Prince Yoshitaka (A.D. ?-974) showed a precocious talent for scholarship and verse from the time he was a small child, but gave up secular poetry to study Buddhism in order to avoid competing with his jealous older brother.  Unfortunately, both brothers died as young men of smallpox on the same day. In this print, the young Yoshitaka is shown deep in thought on the grounds of Senson Temple outside of Kyoto.
