Reading by the moon

(Dokusho no tsuki)

March 1888
The Chinese man studying by moonlight is Zi Luo (543-480 B.C.), a pupil of Confucius who became a government official.  As a young man, he subsisted mostly on wild plants, but carried sacks of rice long distance for his parents.
