Moon of the enemy’s lair

(Zokuso no tsuki)

1886
O-Usu no miko, “Little Prince Usu,” was the most famous hero of Japan’s legendary early times. His exploits are described in both the Kojiki and Nihonji, major histories compiled in the 8th century.  In the story illustrated here, Prince Usu, disguised as a woman, infiltrates the palace of enemy chieftans, kills their leaders and eventually conquers their lands.
