Pema Chosang (b. 1970), Woman Riding Yak: Pema, born in a refugee camp located in Assam, India, is studying thangka (religious scroll) painting, as the style of this work suggests. Here, he depicts a nomadic woman from Amdo, whose distinctive clothing includes a gyabtar hanging down her back. The Amdo gyabtar is worn by a woman who is over 18, signifying that she is now a woman who is able to live in her own tent

 

Phurbu Tsering (b. 1975), Khampa Warriors at Stupa: The province of Kham in eastern Tibet is known for its brave soldiers. Many people from Kham formed a guerrilla movement to resist the Chinese occupying forces after the Dalai Lama fled his homeland in 1959. This painting depicts both the heroic Khampa warrior and the numerous stupas (reliquary shrines) that dot the Tibetan landscape.
